I am an Assistant Professor at Balikesir University, working in computer engineering.

My path through the field has been a long one, and most of it is documented on this site. I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering at Süleyman Demirel University's Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in Isparta in 2013, went on to a master's degree in Computer Engineering at Yalova University's Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences in 2015, and returned to Süleyman Demirel University for my doctorate, which I completed in 2022.

Research

My research sits at the intersection of machine learning and problems from other disciplines — biology, medicine, engineering, and finance.

A recurring thread has been the use of chaotic systems analysis in places it isn't usually applied. In "Prediction of Disordered Regions in Proteins Using Physicochemical Properties of Amino Acids" (International Journal of Peptide Research and Therapeutics, 2015), my co-authors and I introduced a feature encoding technique that links amino acid residues to their physicochemical properties using Lyapunov exponents, and showed it improved on existing methods for recognising disordered protein regions. Related work appeared as "The Chaotic Structure of Bacterial Virulence Protein Sequences" (Computer Science & Information Technology, 2015). The same analytical lens later carried over into financial time series, in studies of Bitcoin price behaviour.

Alongside this, I have worked on applied classification problems: breast cancer classification using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, autism spectrum disorder classification with deep learning, structural damage detection with artificial intelligence algorithms, and performance analysis of optical burst switching using random forests. I have also published on software testing practice, cyber security strategy, mobile cloud computing, and the ways vocational and technical education adapts to changing industry technology.

The blog

This site began in 2011 as Nano'nun Günlüğü — "Nano's Diary" — while I was still an undergraduate. Over the following years it grew into an archive of more than 330 posts on Java, Oracle, .NET and C#, image processing, data mining, parallel programming, embedded systems and software testing, written mostly in Turkish.

They were written as I was learning, which means they are the notes of a student rather than the pronouncements of an expert. I have kept them online because they still get read, and because there is value in a record that shows the working rather than only the conclusions.
